Where Did Those Yesterdays Go
This is a song I wrote for my old friend and writing partner back in the day, Wade Marsten, who passed away in December of 2021. I last saw him in 2017 and I wished I'd kept in better contact with him. He was an amazing person, as anyone who knew Wade can testify to. I was honored to know Wade. He changed my life for the better in so many ways.

Feather
Before the pandemic I made a promise to myself to make more of an effort to performing my original songs in solo settings. After decades as a singer-songwriter it dawned on me that I wasn't really doing much work in that department. Playing in bands, singing on occasion, doing the horn thing, yet. But being on stage alone, just me? Nope. A virtual blank page in my musical resume. It's one thing to sing with a band, quite another to perform alone. Fortunately, there were a group of songwriters and musicians hosting monthly session at the Corvallis Art Center, a stage I've played on with other musicians but never (gasp) all by my lonesome! The first time I performed on piano/vocal alone I was pretty shaky - I was nervous, but I muddled through best I could. Over the months I relaxed more and gained some confidence. I also had the benefit of an audience who was supportive. Further, I began to cultivate some opinions as to what kinds of tunes I felt work working for me personally in that capacity. Watching and listening to the other songwriters/performers is always a good investment. I was proud to be in the room with like-minded folks even though our tastes in music were often widely different. I'm a horn player (trumpet, flugelhorn, some sax) mostly, and am pretty comfy in that role. And I'm comfortable as a writer and producer and recording in my little basement studio where it's safe and free from scorn and embarrassment (mostly). But up on the stage alone with just a piano? That's a muscle I definitely needed to work on. Sometimes the songs I performed were songs I'd written that week. Feather was one such song. I needed a song for that month and came up with this one. When considering what songs to add to my Quietly song collection, Feather was a natural choice. I tried to give the recorded version all the emotion I could. I'm proud of the lyric on this song and the fact that I can blow my horn on it too over some nice chord changes!

Fade Away
I wrote this song just prior to the pandemic of 2020. I performed it once in a solo piano/vocal setting at the Corvallis Art Center. I think it probably came across as "interesting" as I heard at least one person in the audience comment. Yep, that's the way it goes sometimes - or most of the time. Most of us remain islands to each other, few of us really understanding what the true meaning to something is. Fade Away is a song for my own children. An homage to the seemingly endless (but gone too soon) nights of reading stories. Many times I was so sleepy during our reading times, but I knew how important they were for them, for their imaginations, and for simply connecting and being able to tune out any stuff of the day and go into another world. Fade Away also plays with an idea (in a subtle way) that we all fade away - we grow older, we change, and our dreams evolve. That's all part of it. But the bigger meaning of the song involves the notion of a never-ending story. Are we at the beginning? The middle? The end? Maybe, but I'm not sure the story ever ends. Now that I'm a "Bapa" I'm seeing the world from that point of view again, only a bit different. So Fade Away may be an "interesting" song or something else. To me, it's much more and very special too.

Morning
Morning was written during the late summer of the pandemic in 2020. I'd recently purchased a ukulele as I was feeling a bit down (who wasn't?) and thought it might cheer me up. (If I were a stand-up comedian, I'd open this story with, "You know, a guy needs something small to play with once in a while.") The ukulele was sort of my own pandemic pet, only this one didn't bark and all I needed to do was strum it....
-
Punkie and the Spitfires
I'd been playing ukulele for a few months and was discovering some sounds I thought were cool. It was the discovery of learning new chords and shapes along with the vague idea of a story about an "all-woman" band that made this tune come together. I've been inspired by so many female artists and bands: Heart, Carol King, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, The Go-Go's, to name a few. It was only recently that the band Fanny came to my attention. They weren't on my radar as a kid, but should have been. During the pandemic I listened to a lot of Fanny's music and learned a bit about their lives and music. Donald Fagan's "The H Gang" was a cool vibe that I have to confess I drew inspiration from.

Jeffries Tube Rendezvous
This tune was written and produced over a ten day period. It started with a ukulele chord progression that I was jamming on before bed. The next day I came up with a melody and a couple days later I started recording it! The title arises from my enjoyment of Star Trek. The "Jeffries Tube" is referenced now and then - it is where the crew typically goes to repair stuff. There's often a sense of urgency and life or death in there - but sometimes it's just routine maintenance and a normal day at the office. Probably not a lot of romance going on in the old tube - but who knows!? The song seems to have a touch of a romantic quality to it, but there are other musical moods going on. Swallow Me Whole
Experiments in animation - words, music, video by Rob Birdwell. A work in progress. The song "Swallow Me Whole" draws from the Jonah and the Whale story. Only in this case, it's a monster - a mean orange monster. To fight and defeat him, we must convince him to swallow us whole - and then we'll beat him from the inside out! Category Music

So Lost
I think I'll just leave it to your imagination what this song is about, although if you don't get it you're either not listening closely or you're lying. I won't bore you with the details of my creative process, but suffice it to say that I've done my share of research on this topic and feel quite comfortable singing enthusiastically about it. On a serious note though there's some truth to the "so lost" line. This was written during the pandemic and maybe I was trying the be a bit humorous, but like many I too was feeling lost and doing everything I could to keep my spirits up. Writing this song lightened my mood and allowed me a chance to have some fun too. I wrote it on ukulele which is a great way to learn an instrument!

Surrounded
This song is notable for a couple things. First, it's the shortest song in the collection at just over 2 minutes and 14 seconds. Second, it's the only song in this collection where the title of the song doesn't appear in the lyric, which is rare for my songs. It's a very personal song for me. It began with hearing some sad news about an old friend, but the lyric only skims that aspect and even then it's quite obfuscated. All the familiar elements are at play - love, loss, life, longing. Other than to say it was written during a horrific pandemic I'll leave it at that. But I will add that this is perhaps my favorite song in the collection in terms of form and flow. It's a tone poem of sorts I guess - I'm really not sure, but I like it.

Quietly
This song was originally written at a faster tempo. I performed it with LMNO in rehearsal and at at least one gig (2017?). I wrote it originally as a reaction to yet another horrific mass shooting. But the song seemed to apply to just about any political fiasco - police abuse, political corruption, and even a pandemic. I performed it on piano in the early days of the pandemic and then again later in the summer of 2020 for a solo show. By turning it into a slower groove ballad I was able to sing it a bit more relaxed and let the song sort of sing itself. It took me a long time to finish the recording, lay down a simple trumpet solo and get the background vocals sort of the way I had them in my head. But by golly I finished it in 2021. Ho hum.... Maybe it's cheesy, overly sentimental, and just pure schlock. But it's what I was feeling at the time and if hoping for a better world, more sanity, more peace, less senseless violence, etc., then consider me a lost cause.

The Hummingbird Song
This was the first song I wrote on ukulele! Rumor has it that if you throw a ukulele down a hill it will play this song! (Dave Barry made a similar joke and credit goes to him for that one!) While the pandemic was going on in the summer of 2020 there was a great deal of angst and uncertainty. Naturally, there were no gigs in the interest of safety (and common sense) but by summer some of us were playing outside together at a safe distance. It felt so great to play music with friends. To joke, tell stories, laugh, and play tunes together. On one such occasion (at Michael Proctor's home and backyard) I brought my ukulele. I think I knew all of 5 chords on the thing and I'm bringing to rehearsals! But that's me. At one point I noticed a beautiful hummingbird flying directly near me. It was a sight to behold and felt a bit magically at a time when there was so much loss and heartbreak around the world. The tune came quickly. I could play the simple chords on the ukulele and there were only a couple knuckle busters (at least for me at the time). I made a demo that summer and shared it to some friends to commemorate the moment. I thought that might be it, but over the fall, winter, and spring of 2021 I put on my producer's hat and finished the recording of my little tune. I like the lyric on this one. I probably wouldn't be far off in saying the song wrote itself, but that's not entirely true. I managed to craft a few lyrical angles that I'm pretty happy with.

Sideways Portal
Sideways Portal - jazz, experimental, groove, funky, and forgiving. In September of 2007, musician Dave Storrs and I crossed paths one day while I was going to pick up my "crappy Chrysler" at the repair shop. (It's actually not so crappy!) And thanks to the timing of that vehicular breakdown, Dave invited me and some other terrific players (John Bliss, Page Hundemer, Steve Willis, and Mike Curtis) to his Corvallis studio for a jam session. Right out of the gate there was a very good vibe with the music and sounds we were making and, to date, we've compiled quite a number of fine recordings.

She's On To Me
She's On To Me - music and lyrics by Rob Birdwell It's a simple tune and possibly the lyrics are the most original part but in the scheme of things we're all sort of channeling the same sentiments most of the time - probably several tunes out there much like this one. The lyrics can almost be taken a couple different ways (and I like that too) but it's just a little fantasy/love song at heart.

Morning
A couple months before writing (and recording) this song I ordered a ukulele. I'd never tried one before, but always thought it a lovely instrument. I was hoping it would be fun to play around with, learn something new, etc. For me it was all that and more! I'm still learning and you can maybe hear it in the mix. Simple chords and a rank beginner strumming them, but that's why I make records - to chronicle the journey!

We Are Earthlings Too
This is an instrumental featuring me on all the production including Trumpet, Ukulele, keys, programming, etc. I mixed in some sample beats from my Pocket Operator drum board which I programmed - very easy to do, but it gave the track a unique character I think. And musically I have to say I like the way the trumpet solo came out.

Sonny
This is a song I wrote about meeting the great Sonny Rollins when I was a "kid" (teenager) in the 80s. Sonny really was super kind - I'll never forget going "backstage" (back tent actually) and meeting him. I'm sure the friends I was with (Steve, Brian, Brad and others) were pretty jacked too. This is a work-in-progress (home) studio tracking session. Not sure if this will be the final vocal take - it was my 3rd "scratch" take. After the 2nd take I decided to do a take with a camera rolling. I'm still not sure if I'll dub a flugelhorn solo over the changes or if I'll invite a guest for a tenor sax solo. Since the song is about Sonny, a tenor sax solo seems right...we'll see. This next collection of songs I'm working on will be fairly stripped down - with me on piano & vocals, some little trumpet/flugelhorn solos here and there. I'm steering clear of the trappings of drums, bass, guitar at least for this round of songs (about a dozen or so) just to let the "song" be the focus rather than the production.

Quietly Piano Vocal
This song is about hanging in there - putting up a good fight, doing the right thing, and a touch of sticking it to the man. Even if your voice is soft, muted, hidden, marginalized, or held back for any reason, it's still YOUR VOICE. And like this song says, "A soft voice is strong when it's joined by millions..."

Hands
This is a video of me playing flugelhorn about 5 months after a major surgery. Checking in and I'm doing well after much work. At this point there's more work to do in recovery, but I'm improvising, holding my chops together and, best of all, it feels really good to play! Read more details about my journey in the YouTube description for this video.

Sometimes Always
I wrote this song intentionally trying to write something very simple and this was the result. I recorded this live video a week after writing it just to chronical the moment. My hope is to eventually produce this song with a bit of arrangement (not much), just enough to support the simple idea. The verses emphasize the ephemeral nature of things - skies are grey, friends are far away, days are long, it all goes wrong, etc., whereas the chorus is a declaration of of immutability of one's love. Simple stuff. Only took me half a lifetime to write! ;)
